They fill like they are lost in the world and can't understand most things they come up against. Those kids tend to have an out look on life that no one cares. Then they take the wrong path in life and end up on drugs or either end up in jail.

This problem starts at the elementary level, where everyone is afraid that holding kids back will hurt them socially and emotionally. They need to quit passing kids who can only attain a C or a D level in elemntary school. Then they will be prepared and able to pass high school.

What happens to society... Have you ever heard of the United States? That is a society of non properly educated peoples.

Let me tell you what I think should happen... the schools should be accountable and held financially responsible... if you graduate from high school with a barely functional reading level or math ability, and you were NOT in a Special Education program, I say the school should pay for all remedial classes that you will need to take for college and also pay a fine, say $10,000, to the State to be used to improve public education.

Do you really need the good people on yahoo! to answer this question for you? Just take a look around, my friend. Try to hold an intelligent conversation with a recent high-school graduate. If you've any kind of education, you'll walk away in 30 seconds or less. Flip on your television to see the garbage that passes for entertainment in our society.
When the citizens are not properly educated, society goes to pot.

Social promotion teaches students not to try. They get the message that it's okay to fail, and this will continue in their adult life. You'll hve a crop of unproductive citizens who can barely read, write, hold down a job, and eventually will add to the welfare burden.

Instead of social promotion or retention, emphasis should be on intervention, consequences, and studies of how some students learn differently, and this should start in the early grades.

Ahh, my soapbox.
It has been proven that most convicts in jails and prisons have some type of learning disability that was not addressed in public schools.
So the problem is, schools do NOT help children who have learning problems. When the parents try to get help, schools lie, cheat, violate laws, take parents to court and everything else to NOT help a child who needs help with special ed services.
The schools say they do not have enough money for this, but it has been proven and documented that each state RETURNS funds that they got from the federal gov't for special ed services each year! Up in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for each state!
SO, instead of helping children in school because they don't have enough money (which by the way is not THEIR money, it's the TAXPAYERS money)
they pass them along and then when the child is grown, the TAXPAYERS foot the bill for the prisons and jails.
And it would have cost so much less just to help them while they were in school.

First of all, the value of a high school diploma decreases. Secondly, the education level of the society as compared to other societies lessens (town vs town, state vs state, country vs country) and it will eventually be harder for citizens of that particular group to gain employment with that level of education as opposed to citizens of another particular group, so the economic level of those particular citizens will fall, resulting in more dependence on social services. Dang, should have studied thse fractions in 4th grade......
