Diamonds are one of the world's most precious gems. The word diamond comes from a Greek word, "adamus", which means invincible. This is because diamonds are the hardest minerals in the world. They are 1000 times harder than rubies or sapphires. Not even the most powerful acids can harm a diamond's surface. Diamonds really are invincible.

You can safely clean you diamond with just about any cleanser. However, you need to give consideration to the material that makes up your setting for the ring. So, water or alcohol is fine.
Yes diamond is the hardest mineral on earth and only other diamonds can scratch a diamond. That is why industrial diamonds (low quality diamonds) are used in the grinding, polishing and drilling industries. Synthetic diamonds are primarily used in industrial applications because no one have been able to produce gem quality diamonds cheaper than real diamonds. There are fake diamonds that being passed along as "synthetic" diamonds but I can pick them out in a heart beat and by using the reflective index of the crystal.
While most people know that diamond is the hardest mineral, not everyone is familiar with the terminology "toughness" of diamond. While hardness of the diamond deals with its ability to withstand scratches, toughness deal with breakage. Yes you can split a diamond cleanly striking it at a certain angle. No it does not shatter like glass but it will split. That is how the jewelers split a large "rough" into several smaller "roughs" to be cut and polished.
Finally, extreme high temperature can harm a diamond but we do not come across that in our natural surroundings.

I would talk to a jeweler. They say sometimes people have unique ways of presenting the diamond like in cake and they present a horrible clean up mess with the diamond and the setting. It is a valuble piece remeber do not stress it.

How about reading on here instead. They usually have good info. If I have something I want cleaned that is jewelry I usually just take it to a good jeweler where I purchased it and have them clean it or establish a reputation with a jeweler by looking at their stuff and ask them to clean it. They know I look at their items and do it in good will.
They are telling you to clean it with another diamond because it will scratch up both diamonds.

The reason to be careful when cleaning diamondd jewelry is to prevent damage to the setting, this is why you should use soap and water. Diamonds do not stain so they will clean very easily.
If you want to damage a diamon you will have to do something like burn it in a fluorine flame at about 10 atmospheres or more. This is not something that you could do in your kitchen!!
You can, of course etch a diamond using a laser. Once again, not something to do in the kitchen.

Diamond is the most hardest substance found on earth as you know. So diamond can cut a diamond.
I think metals like tungsten and carbide can also cut it but not easily.

What ? some body is messing with you ... Diamonds are the hardest natural substance you could use your muddy water outside and it wouldn't "effect " the diamond. unless you are using a sander and a diamond one at that you are fine.

Anything can destroy diamonds if you have enough of it. :P
As for cleaning them, I don't know. I'd probably just use soap and water; it's pretty good for cleaning other things. If you're worrying about damaging a diamond while cleaning it, I don't think you'll have much of a problem unless you're cleaning it with diamond or corundum sandpaper (which you probably don't have).

Any jewelry cleaner is safe. Ash and water is usually used to clean silver, but it is messy and unnecessary. As a jeweler's ex-wife, I recommend one part amonia to two parts hot water (also excellent for cleaning gold). Any household amonia will do.
