You have received some good answers. Also, if you depend on vegetable sources for your iron (such as Spinach, for example), be sure you also consume a food high in Vitamin C (such as oranges). The C helps your body to increase the absorption rate of the iron.

"Up to 22% of the iron in meat is absorbed, while only 1-8% is absorbed from eggs and plant foods."

"The absorption of iron from plant foods is improved by the presence in a meal of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), other organic acids such as malic acid (e.g. in pumpkins, plums and apples) and citric acid (in citrus fruits). "

Hi, iron is a very important component of haemoglobin, as it transports the oxygen in the blood to all the different parts of the body. Another important role of iron is its role in metabolic reactions. An iron deficiency can cause anaemia, this results from the low levels of haemoglobin in the blood.

Good sources of iron can be found by eating: Red meat ; Liver; Leafy Green Vegetables e.g. broccoli, kale; Legumes, such as baked (haricot) beans, Lima beans, pinto beans ; Wholegrain bread; Sunflower seeds; Tofu; Breakfast Cereals e.g. All Bran,
Corn Flakes and Cheerios; Prune juice; Figs; Water melon; Raisins.

Hope this helps

Hi

In addition to the food answers you've been given .....

After I'd had a blood transfusion I was put on iron tablets and the doctor suggested to me that I took them with orange juice (fresh not cordial) as this helps the body to absorb the iron.
