Normally protein is not found in urine as the kidneys is supposed to keep protein in the blood. But sometimes small amounts of protein does escape if the levels in the blood become high Sometimes proteins will show up in the urine even when the kidneys are functioning properly

Normal urine contains approximately 40 % albumin, 20 % filtered plasmid proteins and 40 % tamm-Horsfall proteins from tubular secretion. In adults, it is considered normal an excretion of protein of about 150 mg per 24 hours. When testing it is important to confirm with more specific tests such as the sulfa salicylic acid test, which denatures the protein with acid, after determining its absorbance with a spectrophotometer.
