Pheloloxidase production in tissues is GREATLY reduced under pregressively higher levels of hypoxia and is also reduced in conditions of low pH. These effects were measured individually, but presumably they would be cumulative when both are present, such as in river deltas with lots of decomposing matter.

Lower phenoloxidase is, of course, a BAD THING for c. sapidus, because that enzyme is involved in immune defense against bacteria and healing shell injuries.
