1500 is about average. You can expect to want about 1700 to get into a decent college. Averages at higher level colleges you would expect to be 1800-1900.

Elite colleges, expect to need atleast 1950-2000+ (Ivy league), and a score of closer to 2100 to have a really good shot at getting in (only about 1-2% of people score this high)

And yes, for those that didn't know they've added more to the SAT and the max score is not 1600 but 2400. In comparison, a 2100 is about 1400-1450 on the old sat. 1500 is about 1000-1050 on the old. It's also some 5 times harder to get a perfect score now than it was between 1990-2004.

If you want to get into a reasonably good state college, the average score is in the high 1000's (for example, 1700). So, if you have a lower score, don't fret, unless it is lower than 1200.

Unless it has changed SAT scores go no higher than 1600 (combined English and Math) I would say anything over 1200 would get you into a good college although colleges can not just go on SAT scores alone.

I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores:

I recommend this guide to anyone seeking to get a higher score to get into a first choice college.

1200 is the bottom line for most schools.
