i was just posting a little while ago and somone said "soccer, for the yanks?" does that have history behind it, is it supposed to be an insult or just short for some word. By the way i live in america.

It is usually British slang for Americans.

You live in America and you have never heard people from other countries refer to us as Yanks (Yankees). It was actually the term used towards people that lived in the North during the civil war (south were rebels). I bet if the south won the war they would call all Americans rebels.

Yanks means Yankee, a slang term for Americans. i think it goes back well before the civil war. Maybe from the term Yankee Trader or Yankee Doodle Dandy, a song from Britain about unsophisticated americans.
