Hi 'marym', your concern about what is going on in the Middle East is appreciated. What has happened is recently President Bush and team suggested a road map for the Middle East which led the region to nowhere! The Palestine authority was urged by the Western powers to persuade the militants like Hamas to come into the mainstream politics and contest elections which they did but when they came out with flying colours and were ready to form a government, America turned its back to it and started saying it won't deal with a Hamas government (rather a democratically elected government as suggested by USA)! Further, America continues to arm Israel as was pretty clear in the renewed conflict between Israel and Lebanon. And, it is ironic that a country like Germany should be part of the UNSC-5 and urge Iran to give up its nuclear program but it (Germany) has just announced a fresh sale of nuclear-capable submarines to Israel! And, Israel is reportedly already in possession of nuclear warheads! Now, such double standards on the part of western powers are only deepening the crisis rather than solving it and it will remain so for many years to come. Of course, with Russia and China opposing any sanctions against Iran, Iran will continue with its nuclear programme and it may eventually include possessing nuclear weapons, and when that happens. Middle East will definitely turn into a potential HOT SPOT for a major conflict - may be the Third World War!

Because the West has been trying to dominate the Middle East for over 150 years and determine the boundaries for each country at the end of WW I and then tried to control the natural resources (oil) in the Middle East, the West still has not succeeded. Based on that scenario, I would say the Middle East is going to be determined by the people of the Middle East and the sooner the US and the West butt out the sooner there will be peace although this will not be to the liking of the US and the rest of the West but then the US and the West is not to the liking of the Middle East but that does not mean there could not be peace between the the cultures.

Well the isamic countries have stood there for several centuries and have seen waes of invaders come and go. Moreover they are a pretty tightly held community.
USA would eeventually have to stop interfereing and messing up world politics. All the US does is provide weapons and help to achieve short term goals and eventually ends up imbalancing world politics.
Israel should stop trying o take over parts of Palestine and vice-versa. Everyone has a right to have a home and till Israel doesnt respect that and quits evicting people the war wouldnt stop.

As in Korea, and in Vietnam, nothing will be solved and the US will return home with its tail between its legs. The war was caused by the US by our support of corrupt regimes and then when the people (the terrorists) who rejected their dicatators and the US, we felt we had to stomp them and as Ho Chi Minh firmly showed, a smaller army is not always weaker, it depends on the resolve of the people. Already in the US, people are beginning to lose interest in the war and to lose heart in the fight. Even Bush himself is talking about withdrawal. The generals want to stay...it justifies a fat budget and their own jobs....but ultimately, we will withdraw.
