If you have pain that persists longer than a month after your shingles rash heals, your health professional may diagnose post-herpetic neuralgia, the most common complication of shingles. Post-herpetic neuralgia can cause pain for months or years. It affects 10% to 15% of those who experience shingles.6 Treatment to reduce the pain of post-herpetic neuralgia includes:6
Antidepressant medications, such as a tricyclic antidepressant (for example, amitriptyline).
Topical anesthetics, such as lidocaine patches, to numb the area.
Seizure medications, such as gabapentin.
Opioids, such as codeine.
Topical creams containing capsaicin may provide some relief from pain. Capsaicin may irritate or burn the skin of some people, and it should be used with caution.

Shingles is caused by the herpes zoster virus - the same virus that causes Chicken Pox. Once you are infected you cannot get rid of it becuase it stays along the nerves pathway. Every now and then it will flare up not as Chicken Pox but as shingles. When that happen it moves along the nerves pathway causing pain. It usually resolves itself after about 10 days or so. By itself it is not fatal but because it causes great discomfort to patient the patient consitution may be compromised as a result of lack of sleep etc... . There are several treatment that can help alleviate the suffering but the only effective treatment (and that only partially) is Zovirax (generic name: Acyclovir). Treatment both with its cream and tablets need to be started as early as possible-preferably within the first 24-48 hours of symptoms. There are some evidence that the Chicken Pox vaccination may prevent the outbreak of shingles as well. any case it does lessen its impact.

Your doctor is a FOOL...get some gabapentine(neurontin). This drug has been shown to be a BIG help in post herpatic neuropathy.(the best description is that it makes the pain feel like it is waaaaay over there) You do need a script and if that jackass you are seeing won't give you one; well, look on the brightside you need a different doctor anyway...
