I think there are two competing philosophies, humanism in various types, from secular to religious, struggling with religious fundamentalism based on the Old Testament.

I would like to return to this question, possibly answer further. First, my daughter is waiting for me to play chess with her. Excuse me, please.

It depends where. In Contiential Europe (France, Germany Denmark, Italy etc) the dominant philosophy is Postmodernism (a collective term for Deconstructionism by Derrida and Poststructuralism by Foucault) followed by Existentialism by Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Sartre.

In Canada, United States, and Britian, it's neo-pragmatism and analytic philosophy led by people like Quine, Searle, Putnam, and Rorty.

Although many people wouldn't identify themselves as existentialists, that is principally what many practice in their approach to the world, particularly when it comes to religion. They abandon rational thought and cling to human created divinities and meanings of life.

Actually, under the current Bush administration, I feel the dominant philosophy is greed. "I've got mine, to hell with you if you don't have yours."
