This morning I saw that my husband had dried blood in his ear. So obviously over night he was bleeding from his ear. He says it's nothing, but I'm worried. He's machinist and works with machines every day. He told me that the machines are not loud. But even if he thinks that they are not loud, they can still damage his ears, right? I told him to go to the doc to check it out, but because he thinks that it's nothing significant, he won't go to the doc. What shall I do? Is ear bleeding always a sign of something bad?

If he won't go to the doctor then YOU should call the doctor's office and tell him what is going on with your husband and see what they recommend.

Your husband will lose his hearing if he hasn't already. I suppose you know that by now and perhaps are already aware that he has lost some.

Do yourself a favour and go to the Home Depot or some hardware store and buy a set of those construction headphones that block out noise for your husband. It's the best gift you will ever give him.

Spend as much money and buy the best pair (make sure you get the highest rating for blocking out noise) that you can find.

When he tries them, he will like them believe it. If they have ones that can be worn with or over other equipment he needs to wear too (safety glasses) then even better.

Order them on line if you cant find them.

Bleeding could be a sign that he has perforated his ear drums. Normally just fluid would leak out but if he had repeatedly damaged them then blood is not surprising. But he could have an infection from his ears having perforated (bacteria has entered through the perforation...so it can get serious because bacteria spreads...I'm surprised he isn't complaining of pain or discomfort.

Ask the doc if it's OK to use any type of ear drop like polysporin or something antibacterial if he really won't go at all.

But the whole key is protection.

Ears won't bleed because of loud machinery unless they were so loud that they caused his ear drum to perforate. He needs to see an ENT and an Audiologist. Does he use q-tips or other metal things to clean out his ears? He may have just scratched his ear canal. If that's the case it will heal, but you shoudl probably squirt a hydrogen peroxide water mix in there to help clean the wound. If he hasn't been sticking things in his ears then he needs to see an ENT to make sure that the blood isn't from an ear infection. Blood coming out of the ear should not be taken lightly, this is serious business!!! Also, if he works around machines he needs to have his ears tested annually by an audiologist. just becuase the machines don't seem loud doesn't mean that listening to them all day will not cause damage. He should wear ear plugs to work so that he can conserve his hearing because once he loses the hearing he can never get it back.

You are exactly right! Even most vacuum cleaners are so loud they could damage hearing, so machines can be a lot worse! That blood could mean damage to the eardrum, which will result in some hearing loss or it could be worse. He really should have it checked out, but I know what you're going through. Both my husband and my father are like that. My dad even had pain in his left arm that got worse throughout the day and STILL wouldn't go to the hospital! I had to call my youngest brother to come over and convince him to go. He had shingles. Is there someone you husband listens to? A friend, a son, or somebody? Maybe you can get that person to convince him to get it checked out. I mean it may be something not so bad or it could be bad--it's just better to know if you can do something about it. Good luck!

I've had horrible ear infections with no blood or outward signs so it can't be an ear infection. However I did have blood come out of my ear once the last time I got in a physical confrontation with someone who was intoxicated in Boston 2002. The guy was just looking to get into with someone and chose me I guess because I'm small in stature. Maybe he got in a fight and he doesn't want to admit it. If he loses hearing definately go, thats the sign of a ear infection..

You didn't say how much blood. Perhaps it was an insect or spider bite. I too have had that before.
A lot of blood might be a different matter. Yes, the doctor is called for.

If he works in a machine shop he most definitely should be wearing PPE (personal protection equipment)(if he works with noisy equipment ) for his ears, eyes, feet, etc.
If the company does not provide that, he should either get his own or ensure that they follow safe working practices.

Its very unlikely that the blood from the ear is a ruptured ear drum. Most likely its from an injury to the ear canal from scratching an insect bite or from cleaning his ears (does he use Q-tips?)

If there is a significant change in his hearing
(do you have to repeat yourself more than usual?) or if he is complaining of ear pain.

If he is or the bleeding from the ear persists then he should see a Doctor.

Good luck

It could be an ear infection or if he's downplaying the volume of the machinery he could have a busted ear drum. Us men tend to downplay things so the women in our lives don't worry about us so much. Either way he should get it checked out by an ENT specialist if possible.

The machines are real loud and the could harm his ears.
And I think that he should get some ear plugs when he
is at work so the noise wont be so harmful to his ears
I think you should do this first, but if his ears contiue to
bleed then you should see a doctor.
