a desktop is a computer with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and cpu set..it's bulky and heavy to carry around..hence, it's designed for the desk/table...where else a laptop is a mobile computer where you can carry it around as the monitor, keyboard, cpu, mouse,speakers, etc are all inbuilt to it.. you can use it anyway by just putting in to your lap for support.

a laptop sit on ur lap..a desktop sits on ur desk(wher r u sitting now...at a table with the comp on it..or in a net cafe wit the comp on the table...tats a desktop..)...u wouldnt wanna a desk sitting on ur lap rite... :P anyways nowdays its no longer called a laptop..its called a notebook...and the fancier ones are called tablet pc...
