The Krypton Factor was a British game show, hosted by Gordon Burns, which ran from 1977 to 1995 on ITV. Four contestants would compete in several different games, some studio-bound, some not. Until 1991, each round was introduced by the distinctive K logo, which would morph into a symbol for the round

The show was produced by Granada Television. Since its cancellation, it has been the subject of persistent rumours of a revival on the BBC. In April 2005, it was widely reported that the BBC would be going ahead with a revival. However the source of this story turned out to be a misinterpretation of comments by Wayne Garvie, head of BBC's Entertainment Group (and previously the last producer on The Krypton Factor) naming it as the next "TV gem" that should be revived. The BBC does not at present have any plans to revive the show. .

Krypton Factor 'set for comeback'

The Krypton Factor was hosted by Gordon Burns for 18 years
TV game show The Krypton Factor could make a comeback after the BBC's entertainment head named it as the next TV "gem" that should be revived.
The Krypton Factor, which put contestants through rigorous physical and mental tests, was a fixture in the ITV schedule from 1977 to 1995.

Wayne Garvie, head of the BBC's Entertainment Group, described it as "one of the great shows".

Mr Garvie is credited with successfully reinventing Come Dancing.

"The Krypton Factor is the next great gem of British broadcasting that should come back," he said.

Mr Garvie was the last producer of The Krypton Factor before it was scrapped.

'Definitely interested'

He has succeeded in turning classic favourite Come Dancing into modern hits Strictly Come Dancing and Strictly Dance Fever.

The Krypton Factor featured a string of tough challenges including mental agility, physical ability and general knowledge, involving puzzles, aeroplane simulators and assault courses.

A BBC spokeswoman said Mr Garvie was "definitely interested in the show".

"He was saying it's time to bring it back... and was very complimentary about it," she said.

Repeats of the original version, hosted by Gordon Burns, are currently shown on UK digital channel Challenge.

Copy and paste is great isn't it.

I think it started in 1983. Gordon Burns now reads the news on Northwest tonight. I also remember the comedian Tony Slattery being on it,in some kind of memory test that the contestants had to watch on a screen. Don't know if Granada TV will bring it back again .

I remember that programme - it was great. Don't know if it will ever be on again but it should be - people refer to it all the time. If something is complicated they say "It's like the bloody Krypton Factor"!
Actually, if it ever comes on again, I think I'd volunteer to go on it!

Yes, loved that programme and would have loved to have had a go on some of those mind boggling puzzles and the assault course too, I think they do show old ones on one of the sky channels, it would be great if they brought it back again but no doubt the cost of the insurance for the assault course alone would far too expensive, compensation culture has probably put a stop to that too.

I think it came out in the early 80's. I have seen it advertised for the repeat showings on Challenge TV on Sky.

I'm pretty sure it was around in the late 70's.
I doubt if it will come back - but the old ones are repeated on Challenge TV.
