I am an American living in Canada. Yes, I had to learn a lot of different ways of pronouncing things, but SO WHAT!! Even spelling can be different sometimes. Anyone making fun of Canadians, should look in their own south, and try to figure out what people are saying. Besides, the differences can make for some fun teasing and kibitzing back and forth. Canadians are good natured - they've had to be, and they sure enjoy a good rep around the world, which can't always be said for Americans.

I don't know about making fun of a Canadian's way of pronunciation, but I can make fun of how you spelled neighbour. (I am just teasing you).

I've been to Canada many times, as long as two month periods.
Never saw that.

Have things changed that much in 10 years?
I could live there except for the da*** winters. Love Canada and the people. They're not so different, even if they were, so what!
I was there when Quebec tried to break away. The French refused to speak English, but I got along OK.
I guess I'm getting old, but I'm sure we'd be side by side in a crises.

Hey, as to the South, I can't understand some of the Brooklynese. LOL

I absolutely agree with you... Canadian English is taken after the proper English - from Britain - and it seems that the Canadians have done a great job at keeping it right.. I also think the Americans hate it when they hear the British or like speak. I suppose that anything different to an American (not all, but many) is reason for them to ridicule and criticize. No offense.

My father was born in Canada..... people sometimes ask me if I am Canadian. Must be a trace of an accent there, Eh.
I never noticed that my father had a Canadian accent like all of his brothers.
I am proud of my Canadian heritage.....mostly Scottish, a little Dutch. and one eighth French. No fewer that six of my Canadian relatives were buried in France during WWI.
Two more of my Canadian relatives are in the hockey Hall of Fame.
If I occasionally poke a little fun at the Canadian accent, it is done with love and respect.

Hey, I grew up overseas and in Seattle, where we're really noted for not having a recognizable accent, have relatives in England and relatives with Canadian brogues in Vancouver. I live in Texas now and I get a chuckle out of Texian, "Southern" and Tex-Mex even though I often use some of the colloquialisms myself. I also get a kick out of Canadian, New york, New England and mid-western accents and lots of other local dialects. It doesn't always translate into a predjudice. Bet Canadians make fun of many US dialects.
