Guys want a girlfriend who is as hot as possible while still being someone they could realistically get. If she's too hot, he would have a hard time getting her and keeping her and would be too intimidated to try to get her in the first place.

No I believe that they don't. Reason - is the Beauty and the Beast syndrome. Guys want someone who is NOT as hot as themselves. It provides them a sence of ego assurance. They want to be the HOT one. Not their significant other. The case may be made for the female side too. Look at some couples and see that girls will pick guys who dont look as HOT as they are. Keeps other girls from poaching their guy for one thing. Look at couples around you and see if this is not so. Movie stars are the exception though.
