You use Photoshop CS 2 for non-animated pixel (non-vector) images. You mainly use this for photo editing. You use ImageReady CS 2 for animated non-vector images. You mainly use this for animation on web pages. The differences in this two are:
1. Photoshop have more color modes (RGB, CMYK, Grayscale, Lab Colors, and Bitmap) while Illustrator only have RGB and CMYK modes.
2. Photoshop has greater options of filters than Illustrators
3. Illustrator can only save as *.AI, *.PDF, *.EPS, *.SVG, *.SVGZ, but Photoshop can save as *.JPG, *.JPEG, *.JPE, *.PNG, *.EPS, *.GIF, and many others.
4. Photoshop have Auto Color, Auto Balances capablity, whilst Illustrator don't.
5. Many others
But if you have installed both of these, they can work simultaneosly and back up each other.

Photoshop and ImageReady are linked but separate programs. I use Photoshop for everything, apart from in ImageReady you can do stuff like animated gifs.

Well, I use PS for basic photo editing, etc. etc. - but ImageReady is used to create GIF animations etc. etc. (a little more of the complicated stuff). Essentially, you don't need to use ImageReady unless you want to make animating GIFs or more complicated images.

the main diff is that photoshop is an image editing software capable of doing MANY many things that makes it stand out from any other image editing software. imageready is juz a small branch from photoshop that does slightly more towards preparing images for web design or other areas that you can think of that needs the features offered.
