for a chessboard at least, make sure the lower -right square (nearest you) is a white square. "white is right" should be a decent mnemonic.

The Professor is right but I would like to add that a chess board IS NEVER red and black. Even though both game use an eight-by-eight gameboard each has a unique set of colors.

CHESS:
the white (light) square goes to your upper left, as you sit before the board.
If you play white, the queen will go to the left of the king and be on a white square.
If you play black, the queen will go to the right of the king, and be on a black square
CHECKERS:
the red square goes to your upper left as you sit before the board.
