On the early computers the characters displayed on the screen were made from an 8 by 8 grid of dots so there just wasn't the resolution available (the screen size was 80 characters wide and 40 lines high), the slash was added to the zero to distinguish it from the capital letter O because they where both the same shape.

Zero with a slash = zero. Or the planet Saturn. People who slash their 0's are actually aliens from Saturn.

if the ring has a slash through it it got to be zero or 0. but in the case of capital letters u have to look out for "O" is that the o has a wider diameter and 0 has a more oval shape. !!

0 with a slash is the number, and just in case, 7 with a slash is the #7 because you could mistake it for #1
