Hi! I scheduled my ultrasound next month! I asked if I needed to drink water to "prepare" and I was told the doctor no longer requires a full bladder for the ultrasound - will this affect the image?

Most facilities no longer require a full bladder after about 16 weeks. But, if it were my scan, I would make sure I had something in my bladder. If your bladder is completely empty, the cervix will be hard to see. I would want to insure that my cervix looks normal. Also, if your baby is breech, and laying in the uterus with her butt down at the cervix, then you will not be able to see the fetal sex. Actually, any baby part that is low in the uterus can be hard to see with nothing in the bladder. There is no need to make yourself uncomfortable, but I would not go into a scan bone dry!

Really? Wow...things have changed. I had to have full bladders with both of my kids' 20 week ultrasounds. And it' not like they're 15 years old...my kids are 2 1/2 years and 13 months. Hrm...I don't know. You should call the fetal imaging department at the hospital and ask them. You might want to go with a full bladder anyway, just to be safe. If your doctor was mistaken and you DO need one, it's not like you can automatically fill it up, so you'd probably have to reschedule. If you don't need a full bladder, you can always use the toilet before your u/s. :)

When I do a sonogram at that stage,I still prefer to get a few images while the bladder is full to measure the cervical length and to check for any problems in the lower portion of the uterus and sac, esp. important with any sign of spotting or darkish discharge. After these initial images,I let the patient empty ,then do the other 95% of the exam. Rarely would we do a vaginal sonogram at this stage,so the full bladder does help-but for just a short scanning time while it's full.

In the early stages the womb is still hidden behing your pelvis and you'll need a full bladder to lift it up so it can be seen on a scan. Latre on the uterus has risen up anyway so a full bladder isnt necessary

When I had my children, you were required to drink gallons of water or so it seemed but technology has changed so much since then. To tell you the truth, with my second child, I did not consume half of what they required and they were able to see her just fine. If you were told you did not need to drink so much, I would believe them but you can call back and ask again. It would not hurt to double check. This way you will not be wasting your time or theirs and you won't be disappointed either. It is pure joy to be able to see your little one. Enjoy!

not required at 19 weeks, only in early pregnancy if the bladder is not full, then doctor has to do internal examination using the scope.

Nope, the technology has advanced enough that you don't have to drink a ton of water and be uncomfortable during the ultrasound.

It's not required because I went to the ER for a slip and fall to check my baby to make sure it was okay, and I did not drink any water. They were able to see everything.
