I'm a guy is totally gay and would rather do Justin Timberlake. However, that being said, I can't stand her either and have been wondering the very same thing. Worse yet, almost the whole gay crowd is obsessed with her. This isn't surprising, since a good portion of younger gay males are very shallow, with "depthness" coming into play in their thirties, if it ever does.
To answer your question, it's the result of a couple of things.
First, the nature of American "culture." I dispute it as a culture so much and insofar as a whirling free-for-all wherein the machinery would just as soon grind one to pulp as to see one succeed--and all the while realizing that even if you are "on top" of the machine, like Paris Hilton, or whichever celebrity is being talked about, that machine would like nothing more than to grind you to pulp. If you doubt this, take a look at Ken Lay, Martha Stewart, George Michael, Boy George, Michael Milken, Webster Hubbell, Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King...etc.
The punishments get more severe the more outspoken one gets.
People like Paris Hilton have never known deprivation in their lives. They probably never will. The rest will never know what it is like to drink a $65 cocktail at the Beverly Hills Hotel and not having to pay for it because someone else is.
Regular folk dream about living like that, and in the pursuit of that dream, when unfulfilled for whatever reason(s) [usually laziness, lack of brains, other issues] remain unfulfilled, seek to vicariously live their lives (pathetic, I know) through the celebrities they idolize. This is why spoiled arrogant closet-cased types with several babies (none of them his) who marries every third female costar to keep the image up get to live like kings and queens: They pander to materialistic fantasy.
The truth is that, celebrities, like other people, contain largely unhappy people. If you doubt that you may take Sal Mineo, Montgomery Clift, Judy Garland, John Belushi, James Whale, James Dean, Jim Morrison, Kirk Cobain, River Phoenix as cases-in-point.
This combination of greed-as-good, lack of real intellect and self-discipline, and the outright lie of untold riches as bringers of eternal happiness, together with the grinding reality of most people, sells like no other, when combined with sex...

I know, it scarily enough seems to be a complete sign of the times. Young girls now not only think that they have to be a size 6 and fake tanned to be attractive, but also successful off someone elses money. And if that money isn't Daddy's, it'll have to be off some mug who treats them crap anyway ( see Coleen Mcloughlin, Victoria Beckham etc.)
It's a depressing world to bring a daughter into, and not to go off on a feminist rant, but what would the women at the forefront of the equality battle through the ages have to say about the female 'role models' of today? And by the way, when exactly DID it become attractive to have the body of a ten year old boy?

No idea. She needs to get real. She has something (possibly monay and power) that works to make her successful, but i can't understand the atractiveness of someone so selfish, who couldn't give a damn about how her attitude affects another person, as long as she get what she wants. If she ever had a mighty fall from fame and fortune, i doubt there would be anyone to catch her on the way down, because she has proberbly used and abused them on the way up. Also she needs to slow down on taking on pets. They maybe well looked after by the staff she employs, but i don't think monkeys and other 'cute and furry' wild animals should be used for a photo oportunity. Stick to dogs and cats paris.

I don't know how a person like Paris Hilton can be idolized but it makes me really sad about the state of affairs in America.

The only reason she is famous is for that 'home movie' that she did. She is totally spoilt and has never known otherwise. She has absolved herself of all responsibility. Somebody chooses what she wears, what she does and what she eats. Then three times a week someone sticks a hose up her bum and flushes it all out of her. Unless the hilton hotels go bankrupt, she will never know otherwise.

Well...to most she has everything they could want. Money, privelage, fame, power, "beauty", sex appeal. In a society where all little girls want to be princesses, Paris is essentially American royalty. Inherited billions, silver spoon, looks, celebrity, privelage...I think she's a selfish, self-serving rich kid who, more then likely, will spend the rest of her existance trying to invent new ways to stay popular.

Who ever said she was idolized? She is an item that shows up on the news. Period. If it is a slow news day, we hear about Paris and Britney.

Everyone needs to stop talking about the self serving part time porn star. She must disgust her parents and relatives. She is also a horse faced minger in my opinion.

An idol is made by money. She has money to pay for it. Media is working with money, and media can make somebody who is really unknown, to be a star.

Because she shows one doesn't need any talent or hard work to become rich and famous. She gives a lot of dim-witted people hope.
