My computer crashed (to make a long story short)- I had to get a new hard drive. I just installed Windows XP again. Now, I need to get on the internet- like I used to. My laptop has an internal wireless card. The tech told me it should automatically pick up the internet connection, but it isn't. Is there something I need to do to get it to connect like it used to?

I'm assuming the tech installed ALL the drivers your laptop needs. If not it sounds as if it could be you haven't installed the driver for the wireless network card. If he did install the drivers and seated the card correctly then it could be a matter of doing the following.

Go into my network places and on the left hand side select view all network connections. Make sure that the local area connection is disabled and also disable the wireless connection.....then right after right click and enable the wireless connection and then double click on it this will view all available wireless connections. Highlight yours and click on connect at the bottom.

Also there is a button you can push to enable wireless but I believe going into your network places and viewing your network connections and doing the steps above will take care of that for you.

If this doesn't work I would suggest taking it back to the technician.

Good luck!

Firstly, did you install XP from a manufacturer supplied system recovery disk? If not the driver may be missing?

Most laptops have a button to turn the wireless off and on, worth checking that too.

Does your wireless have encryption enabled? You'll need the key if it does.
