I have a high speed cable internet. I'm planning to buy a wired(not wireless) router so that I can connect it to 2 desk tops and occcasionally to a laptop.
I probably won't use the computers at the same time but wants the desk top connected to a single cable internet via a wired router. Mainly so that I don't have to hook and unhook it. Will there be any issues with it?
Will it slow down speed? Can it work that way? I'll be the only user. I'm eventually going to get a wireless but can't do it due to technical issues.
I appreciate any advise from you computer geniuses.
p.s. Where do I buy a connector "wire" for this. Will radio shack have it. I already have the router.

You won't see any performance loss at all, and here is why.
Your high speed modem talks to the internet at 1MPS or 2MPS speed, while your router talks at 10 or 100 MPS. This means that your network is MUCH faster than the outside connection. You can share drives, share printers and other stuff within your network. But also, when one computer is at one website, and the other computer is at another, the internet messages easily overlap without delay on the internet. Even if two computers are downloading some really big files, you might not notice it slow down.
Radio Shack, Staples and other computer related stores will have Ethernet Patch Cables (CAT 5) for sale... any length, no problem. You can get them much cheaper at http://www.newegg.com
So GO FOR IT.

No, it will not affect it, unless you are using wireless. When you hook the wireless router up, the network will only go as fast as the slowest computer on the network. The average ethernet/networking cable runs at 100mbps (more than you will ever need). The average cheapo wireless card (for laptops) runs at about 11mbps if you even have the laptop on, with a slow wireless card in it, your internet speed will be down to about ten percent of what it was. When you do hook up wirelessly, get a fast card.

Last week, I would have said no. I am having a similar problem where a laptop is connected to my wireless network. The laptop is having problems that I am having trouble fixing. I cannot install my anti virus software or get spybot or malwarebytes to run on it. Whenever I start to download Mcafee updates on the laptop, my whole internet connection (all computers connected to the router) drops. Not sure what it is doing. At first i thought it was changing router settings so I changed the password to the router but it is still happening. Maybe it is doing some activity that my ISP is detecting and cutting off my access temporarily. Still trying to figure it out but I can say that what you are experiencing is possible and happening to me.

High speed cable, no it won't affect it at all. Of course that will depend on what you are doing. If you are downloading on one it might slow the other slightly but generally it will still run faster than you ever did on dial up.
You'll be able to buy ethernet cables easily from many computer places to plug the computers into the router.

The internet connection itself will be the same speed. If both machines access at the same time then obviously that will be divided between the machines.
The wire is a Cat 5 patch lead, I'd expect radio shack to have them.

Technically, it would affect the speed if you were using both at the same time because of bandwidth usage. However, having said that, the speed difference would probably not be noticable. I have 5 hooked up to mine, and several are used at the same time, and there is no significant slowdown at all.

won't drop it down too much at all. Daily Microsoft Upgrades will slow you down faster then a router. (always taking up that memory those bastards). I have a Linksys. Compatable with almost every system. Opt for the double extension antennea. And make sure you close off your connection so noone can park near your house and sponge off of your signal. Good luck.

yes you could ... it wout affect the speed of the connection while u dont use it at the same time ... u can get the wire in some of the computer points near by ... u get the proper cord ( wire ) for ur router ...

No it wont affect your speed. If you are using all the computers simultaneously and using internet on all of them than speed on each of them will go down because it is shared between them.

The speed will only be reduced if you're actually DOING something (for instance uploading or downloading) with more than one computer at a time.
