Go with a Porter Cable Random Orbital Polisher, either the 7336 or 7424 model which is about 100 bucks. If you want to step it up a bit though, the next up would be a Cyclo. A random orbital polisher will be able to remove minor scratches and most swirls and holograms.

As a beginner tip, stay away from circular/rotary polishers like the above mentions Chicago Electric. It's true that they are a true professional's choice and will remove more cosmetic defects, but unless used properly, it's much easier to instill swirls or even worse, burn away your clear coat.

Another plus for the PC or any other random orbital is that the learning curve is relatively easy and the learning process won't risk your paint or clear coat. Besides, most people don't need to bust out the rotary too often.

All the American car manufacturers were producing the huge gas guzzling SUV vehicles, exactly how the general public demanded, that is until the price of fuel rocketed on world markets. This is what caused their downfall. They missed the boat when it came to a changing world. The same will happen if these companies don't start developing cars which are fueled by something other than petroleum or diesel or any other form of oil derivative. We see the how price of crude oil is now, but that is chicken sh!t compared to what it will cost in maybe 20 years, especially at the astronomic rate we are using up this restricted product. Oil is getting more expensive because it is becoming more scarce, the cost of taking new stocks out of the ground has risen dramatically because those sources are so much deeper underground or under the sea. Obama has turned the US auto industry around, for example GM was facing bankruptcy when Bush left power, now they are Nr 1 in the world again ! Obama is quite right to try to use government money to help develop such things, anything that prolongs the usage of oil will help the economy, far more than burying your head in the sand, hoping that someone will find some never ending new supplies of this black gold. Continuing to use oil to power cars means this substance will run out that much quicker, and the cost of the stuff will rise much sooner. Changing towards renewable energy is also a very important part of this, to stop wasting oil in power generation. This is not about climate change, but simple economics, developing things like this now saves money in the long term. If you continue making electricity from oil and gas, how will the cost of electricity rise when oil doubles or triples in price, as it surely will ? You Americans MUST learn to wean yourself away from being dependent on oil. FACT ! Oh.... by the way.... I see your US Republican party is having a wonderful time showing the world what a complete farce they are. No wonder people like you have this "liberal" hangup, I mean... just look at the (Non Liberal) jerks you have to chose from to vote for as Presidential candidates ? What a rabble, they are a complete laughing stock ! An utter disaster for the Republican party. And all their party can do is block your parliament, don't sound like they are that much interested in the American people to me, such is their (still racist) hatred for Obama ! I just heard Romney on TV and I quote "I'm gonna give you gas at $2 a gallon and I'm gonna cut taxes by 20% across the board, and get rid of company taxation, this will kickstart manufacturing in the USA" he said ! How many more trillions of dollars is he gonna borrow to pay for such nonsense ? How on EARTH can he fund such a thing ? Don't your offspring have enough national debt to repay now, for old fashioned, antiquated policies like these ? And what would the average American do if Gas was $2 once more..... you'd probably all go back to buying gas guzzling monsters again ! Talk about living in the past !

this is the most debated question in the automotive detailing field. Air polisher with reduction gears and air regulator stays cool when running and really over works a 5hp compressor. I have had the Cadillac Orbital Waxer from Porter Cable Don't set it down when you go to lunch it will be gone, Mikata blue two speed 3,500/ 1,700 Buffer grinder Black and Decker, Sears silver and black one and two speed. But you know for cheapness my current buffer . Chicago Electric 7" polisher sander Item # 41213, 6 amp 2,800/3,300 rpm and cost only forty dollars and can be found on sale for $29.00 Smaller and lighter than sears I spin full size double sided bonnets with threads in the center and stack six flat washers between the shaft and bonnet. I noticed on the tool truck 3M makes a shaft extension I might try I kinda like the bonnet close to the tool for control. Do you have a " Harbor Freight Store " I have used this current polisher 08/26/2000 to present. So I think it could stand up to heavy duty daily use. I just prep my car for car shows and occasionally color sand and take to lusture show car paint
