I have been to NZ on a couple of occasions and have done nothing but travel both of the Islands... The question is really what do you want to see and do while your are in NZ?

If you want to go for the scenery and wildlife then without a doubt the answers all lie in the South island and especially in the Catlins and Milfourd sound, these two places are stunning and the South coast is an abundance of wildlife on any of the beaches!

If you want the rich Maori culture then the Noth Island will be a bit better off for you while you can learn so much about their history and culture. There is also good tramping on the north island and the Bay of Islands and 90 mile beach at the tippy top are beautiful.

I would recomend buying or renting a camper van if you are a fan of doing things on YOUR own time and that way you can be out in touch with nature that much better also. The best advice I can give is getting a good mix of both island in the first 4 weeks and then deciding which part is your favorite and then going back to explore it more thouroghly.

I myself and moving to NZ next year for a couple of years as I loved it so much the first couple of times I was there. Enjoy your time and safe travels!!

Check out lonely planet online for New Zealand or spend the £12 on a lonely planet guide book for some helpful insight also, it is well worth the money.

You should have enough time to go round the 2 main islands. I will recommend planning on drining from town to town. So you can refresh and top up at each stop. Take your time to run into the side roads. There could be better sights than along the main road.

Your campervan will be handy on long routes or even for staying at a spot you like. Convenient. Just make sure you have enough ration to last your stay while doing so. And head into the next town for replenishment.

You will find it much joy to drive leisurely. Work on a route of a couple of hundred km along the way so you do not rush too much.

You will enjoy the varying scenes as you drive along. Oh, there are known strong wind and icy areas. Just take the necessary precautions if you encounter one.

The south island is very picturesque. You have to see Mt. Cook, Queenstown, and MIlford Sound. The dinner trolley in Christchurch is rather unique.

In Hokitika you are able to see the cutting and carving of greenstone (New Zealand jade) . A bit south is the Franz Josef Glacier that you can walk into and also see the Kea bird in its parking lot.

There are not many "super" highways in NZ, but the scenery is so beautiful you wouldn't want to speed past it anyway! ENJOY - I'm so envious! So many places I have yet to explore!
