I saw this quote "u r my sunshine ................my only sunshine" used by someone as a signature in a mail. Rang a bell somewhere. Where else have I heard this quote before? Is this part of a song lyrics or something? Or some quote by a character in a movie or book?

Gene Autry and many others made the song famous. So famous indeed that Wikipedia has a whole entry devoted to it.

" 'You Are My Sunshine' is a popular song first recorded about 1940. It has been declared one of the state songs of Louisiana as a result of its association with former state governor and country music star Jimmie Davis.

"Davis and Charles Mitchell are the credited songwriters of 'You Are My Sunshine'. According to many sources, Davis bought the song and rights from Paul Rice and put his own name on it, a practice not uncommon in the pre-World War II music business. Some early versions of the song do credit the Rice Brothers. According to some accounts, clarinetist Pud Brown also had a hand with the Rice Brothers in the song's origin or first arrangement."

Needless to say, it's a favorite for karaoke and Japanese/Korean drinking parties. Where often it's the only song Westerners can remember when drunk.

If you don't already know:
It's an old song written by a county sheriff in some southern state.
You have the first verse, The second verse goes:
The other night ,dear
While I was sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms,
Then I awoke, Dear
I was mistaken
So I hanged my head and I cried.

Doesn't rhyme, but it works.

PS Just reread some of the other answers, and I gotta say
Best Answer: "Some singer, sung it". Brilliant
