A Yahoo search for "mushroom identification" (include the quotation marks in the search box) yields 54,200 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I'm sure that you will quickly find the information you seek.

Good luck with your search.

There are edible, inedible, poisonous, hallucinogenic and unknown mushrooms.
There are champions & shiitake shrooms you can buy in the store, awesome edibles you can pick yourself, if you know what you're looking for (Remember, though: You can be wrong only once!!!) .... and those red ones with the white dots - Watch Bambi & what happened to Thumper when he chowed down on those....

Seriously, if you want to go shrooming, find yourself an excellent guide book, but even more importantly, find somebody who is an expert in mushrooms who can VERIFY what is in your basket and whether or not it is safe for consumption. There are quite a few look-alikes out there, some you can tell by licking (taste bitter) others by turning blue when cut into.....

Shrooming is nice. And the widespread association of Mushrooms with danger is for a large part a myth (that doesn't mean it should be taken lightly). In europe this finds its origins in history, where the christian church associated mushrooms with witches, the devil,.. and did all of them off as poisonous & deadly. (this also explains many european mushroom names).

-In fact, there are only a few deadly mushrooms. You can't get around them, but the fact is that they are a minority.
-A large amount of mushrooms are poisonous, and unless you eat a lot of them, they won't kill you. They might give you stomach-ache, or a doctors vistit, but thats it.
-Another large amount is in fact edible. Many edible mushrooms are just never picked because they just don't taste good, but they are not poisonous. A small group of this edible mushrooms is well known for its taste, and are they ones you're looking for.

The most interesting are the hallucinogenic mushrooms. The most used are:
-Psilocybe cubensis
-Philosopher stones
-fly agaric (yes the red one with the white dots, it might be lethal for bambi but not for us (in the right dose))
-Liberty cap (you can pick those in grassy fields)
