I don't think that they dominate the Republican Party, at least yet. In fact there's a distinct possibility that the opposite is happening: that the Republican Party is using Christianity, and that Christianity is in danger of becoming a subsidiary of the Republican Party.
Now, if those Christian Nationalists WERE to take over, it would of course be a very bad thing. Despite its flaws, the United States is a wonderful place, and a very special place, largely because of the extent to which we believe in basic freedoms and that the power of the government derives solely from the consent of the governed. There is no way to exaggerate the importance of that fact:
The government derives its power from the consent of the governed. NOT from anyone's god or religion. The authority of our law comes from our consent. If you change things so that the authority of the law is officially the will of some "god", you have destroyed the United States, and replaced the nation with something no different in principle from Saudi Arabia, or the old European "divine rights of kings" monarchies. This would be the greatest tragedy of the past 200 years.
The threat from Islamic terrorism is insignificant compared with the threat from "Christian Nationalists" (or "dominionists" or whatever they're calling themselves). This is why I oppose Bush: he is aligned with the wrong side. He is standing with religious fundamentalism against the United States.

No, Christian nationalist have the same influnece on the Repudlician party as do Horward Dean and there left wing fring of the deomcrates. Most Americians are clear thinking and land on the fence, in the middle, and we get alog just fine. I do believe anyone should know if you are gay or straight, it is no one bussiness and who should care. Same sex marriage is not to stop gays from getting married, it is to keep sraights from abusing the benifits of it. Mariage is for family, wife, kids a cat a dog a house and all that. Anyone can have that without marrige.

first off the founding fathers wanted us to have a Christian basis for our lives and our government. many things written by our founding fathers show that a life lived with Christ is going to be the only way for this government to live. through time people who did not believe this things are held as the hero's of the founding. though much of Pres. Jefferson ideas found his views into the laws of the land. his idea of a separation of church from state is not found in any early documents . the argument they had was not having an official church for the US. . that is why Freedom of religion is the first freedom in the Bill of Rights. through the courts and people like Mr. Dean they have stripped that right from people. point if I am a Christian I can not be one in office. my not have any part of my faith on displayed at work. so need to hang my hat out side the door. can you imagine any other group being told you can not be who you are in their own office? here are some quotes from our founding fathers. \
John Adams.
we have no government armed in power capable of contendind with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. our Constitution was made only for a religious and moral people. it is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.
or Noah Webster
The moral principles and precepts contained in the scripture ought to form the basis of all our civil onstititions and laws. All the miseries and evil man suffer from man vice,crime,ambition,injustice,... ,slavery and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the bible.
or Dr.Benjamin Rush the father of public schools:
I lament that we waste so much time and money in punshing crime and take so little pains to prevent them....we neglect the only means of establishing and perpetuating our republican forms of governmentthat is, the universal education of our youth in the principles of Christianity by means of the bible... equality among mankind....respect for just laws...and sober and frugal virtues.
personally think that if you look at the country and can see that John Adams words so true today. by people that have no problem kidnapping, raping murdering , stealing ,selling drugs..... things that have regular people scared just to let their kids play outside. this is not the country our founding fathers invisioned.

Interesting article. If they take their world view entirely from the old testament, doesn't that make them Jews, rather than Christians? didn't Christ come to Earth to re-interpret the scriptures?

I don't think it's a good idea to be a republican period. But, what you're talking about is a theocracy and is never a good thing for a country. Those who wish to live in one should go try Iraq.

LMAO, I'm a transvestite with a stripper for a wife. This world blows more and more everytime whack job Bible thumpers get in my bedroom with their overbearing unjustified control of what I do behind closed doors. I'm not hurting anyone, would they like it if Bibles were decided to be evil brainwashing? Maybe I'll submit a bill and see if they like it.

I have conservative friends who are absolutely sickened by their party's slide into it's current status as an agency that promotes government controlled religion.
They see this as fundamentally opposed to the traditional conservative agenda, and all of us - left and right - want decisions of faith left to the individual, not ordered by some American "Faith Czar."

Depends on their agenda. If that agenda is good and helps the American people,I have no problem with it.But if their agenda is not for the better America and for their personal motives then I'm against it.
