I can get sound from the menu but can't get any sound on the main movie anyone ...?

Sounds like a fault on the dvd. Anime have more audio problems than the average dvd because of the English translation tracks added to western versions. Sometimes a bad batch sneaks through with audio problems. I believe that this did occur with Ghost In The Shell:2. You can easily get a replacement wherever you bought it. Otherwise...
Make sure you're not trying to listen to 5.1 or 6.1 surround on an old tv, but I've never encountered a setting that leaves absolutely no sound. Also, double-check that your dvd player is connected properly to your tv.
Also, most anime come in two-disc sets - one disc with stereo and the other with surround-sound options. Try both.
Whatever you do, don't give up on the movie - it's one of the best pieces of movie-making i've seen in years.

Yes, try different audio choices on you DVD player- it might be encoded differently from the main menu (although that would be weird)

Perhaps you recently reset the default audio to watch something else?
