Actually, on average (no nasty letters about leaving out lefties) we hold the fork in our left hand and the knife in our right while cutting our food, then when we're done-we switch....weird, huh? I remember a riddle from a long time ago where the people knew which guy in a pub was American by the way he switched hands to eat. Most Europeans I know leave the fork in the left hand. This might explain why kids who are learning to set the table are so confused about the placement of the fork.

It depends on whether or not you are left or right handed, however, I have noticed that Americans tend to cut up the food, put the knife down and then eat using the fork in the right hand, whereas we normally hold both all the time.

I'm an American, and I've never used the "switch method" that most Americans prefer. I'm not an Army brat, though. I just decided that the following way was more practical: I have knife in right hand, fork in left, I cut the meat, and use the left hand to insert fork into mouth. My utensils never leave my hands. Simple, yet elegant.

I lived in Indiana and worked at a restaurant for four years and I think the answer would be they only hold a fork...very rarely did I see an American using a knife...it's kind of a joke in our family now.

It think it's based on which handed you are and which way your parents taught you. I am right handed, I hold the fork with my right and knife with my left. But my husband is also right handed, and does it the other way-knife in right, fork in left.

I have my fork in my left, and my knife in my right. But after I make the cut, I switch the fork to my right. I'm right-handed.
