I have a 2 month old that has a viral infection. The only thing that the doctors could give her was some nose drops. Well, she went to sleep last night at 6, and has only woke up to eat, and then shes right back asleep again. My baby usually doesn't go to bed until 10 and then is up for the day, or atleast for 3 or 4 hours, at 5:30 am. I know she is sick, but should I worry because she won't get up? Every time I try to wake her she starts crying, and she never cries unless something is wrong. Should I worry, can i get some other answers other than ask your doctor please!

dont wake her up, she needs all the sleep she can get. what i do is moniter her temperature if she's running a fever, never let it spike over 102F (i forgot what exact temp). don't worry, babies are hardier than you think.

I am not a health care professional, but I am a mother, and i think I would be very worried. Your baby is very young. Whatever happens, will tend to happen quickly--so don't hang about wondering, if you are in doubt. Go to casualty if outside normal hours, or your GP during, and don't leave until you feel satisfied that you know what's going on, and feel comfortable with the outlook. Trust your "mother's instincts", and ask for more information, and/or a second opinion , if need be. The health of your child is not an area to be too "polite" and compliant in regard to--ask questions, be assertive, and if your worried, trust it.
Also--has she just been vaccinated?? The "infection" could in fact be vaccine related, and if so, might be an indication that further vaccinations should be postponed, or forgone. If you would like some info on vaccination, and adverse effects, feel free to email me. Good luck.:)

The physician really is your best source of advice, but as a mother I can tell you this. There isn't really anything they can do for a viral infection other than try to releive the symptoms. As long as the baby is waking to feed and doesn't appear dehydrated let her sleep. If she stops waking to feed or isn't wetting her diapers you should call the doctor right away. Until then, sleep really is the best thing for her since it will help her fight the infection off.

Hi,

Please check your baby's temperature. My Pediatrician always says that 99.9 or lower rectally if fine. Under armpit, 89.9 or lower. If his temp is elevated above these numbers then you need to call your doctor right away or get him to an emergency room at a hospital. Look for these other signs. Is he urinating? Is his urine smelly or a dark color? Is he eating at all? Is he keeping any food down at all? Is he lethargic (really sleepy), you said yes. Chances are, if this is a viral infection, he will not eat much, will vomit and/or have diarrhea and will be somewhat lethargic. If you have any concern please ask your child's doctor. Sorry, this is my best answer. 2 month old's still sleep a good amount of time, also. If her temp is okay and she is urinating (multiple times per day) and having bowel movements (at least once per day) then I would hang in there and not panic. Also, I heard that Pedialight (spelling??) is good to give to a sick baby/child to replace lost electrolytes and nutrients. I have never tried this, myself.

All you can do with a viral infection is treat the symptoms. A 2-month-old can't tell you what she's feeling, so your best bet is just lots of comfort and cuddling. The better she feels emotionally, the better her immune system will work. The sleep is probably helping her to rest & heal.

DON'T let any well-meaning friend or family member try to give you antibiotics. They are only for BACTERIAL infections and will not help!

That's get over, is good if she sleeping and don't wake her up. She is a baby and if she is sick her body need some rest. Viral infection always after 3, 4 days go away.

It is totally okay for your baby to sleep. Just sooth the little thing and rock her as she sleeps. Although it isn't normal for her, think about when you have a viral infection and how often you want to see.

Advice from a mom of two:

Let her sleep, when she wakes up change her diaper, feed her, suck out her nose (useing nasal saline helps remove more snot) Give her a little water to help hydrate her. To help breathing put a vaporizer in the bedroom with her and put vicks in it. This too will help with the congestion and breathing. You can also go get some PEDICARE and give the smallest doseage.

Good luck and I hope your little one feels okay. Try to get some rest too.

Don't you like to sleep when you're sick? Don't wake her...her little body needs all the rest it can get now to get over this viral infection. I'd say as long as she's not running a high fever, vomiting, or acting unusual in any other way, let her be! She'll wake up when she's hungry.

If your child is sleeping all the time and you have to wake her to feed, something else is going on and I know you said not to tell you to ask your doctor, but I think you should take her to a doctor being she is so small. Make sure she is getting enough liquids so as not to dehydrate her, and watch for any signs other than the norm. Sleepy, lethargic, high fever, fussier than usual, even her crying differently, flushed skin.

It is normal for babies (and adults, for that matter) to sleep when they are ill. The human body fights off illness best when we are sleeping. As long as you are able to wake her to ensure she is having enough fluids, I would not worry for now. Keep a close eye on her for the next 48 hours and she will probably be back to her normal self within this time. If she is still sleeping excessively after this time (or if her temperature rises above 39), take her back to the doctor or to your hospital's emergency department.

it is hard when babies that little get sick, but your doctor is right. if it is a viral infection there is no medicine that will get rid of it. all you can do is try to keep her comfortable. be grateful that your babies way of getting thru it is sleeping...i have 2 sleeper and a screamer...my lil girl screams her head off when she is sick.
just let her sleep and as long as it doesn't seem like she is having trouble breathing let her be.
i hope she gets better soon! i know this is stressful for you...i go crazy when my kids are sick!
