I know what you mean. I did hear once it was because saying you are English is considered to be racsist. I thought that was shyte because on forms these days there are boxes for Welsh, Scottish and Irish and then there is the box for British,White then British, Asian then British, Black. I think its is the goverment that actually make people feel racsist by doing things like that.!! Rant over..LOL

Because it is a Nationality and not an ethnic group! You can be Black and English, Asian and English, Chinese and English etc, etc. Most of the time you tick white if you are white and English/ British.

Good question, but i think we need to find out what makes an English person first. It's no longer a white person, many Black, Asian, along this meny others are born and bred English, not just British.
So where can you draw the line?

Depends on the form.
Some say White European and Non White Euopean!
I am glad they added Irish to some, the more enlightened ones that is.
Not sure about the English thing. Maybe you should add your own box and tick that if it bothers you so much?

screw them, i always write ENGLISH. it is my birthright. i, my parents, my grandparents, and thier grandparents all hail from this triangle of mud we call home.
their blood has defended it, and their labour has added to the fabric of society... and i am offended by anyone who besmirches their achievements, or denigrates their postion in the world. We are Englishmen, and Women, we are the defenders of the faith, we are the worlds finest engineers and we have been a soverign state for over 1000 years. i am proud to be English, and if some PC namby pamby has a problem with it, what do i care. I'm English.. its not a problem as far as im concerned. and anyway, what are they going to do about it, put me in the tower (of london.)

One is allowed to say scottish, irish or welsh, but if one says english or speaks of celebrating St Georges Day, we are accused of being racist. However as an englishman i fly the union flag and the cross of st george. and i pride myself in not being a racist.

I am also English and resent having to be clumped in with British or UK. Those are political entities which include my nation but they are not my nation. I AM ENGLISH.
