I got a new caddy for my old hard drive but dont know wat to do next!
I have XP so it installed automatically (plug-and play I think they call it?) but it does not show up in My Computer. I hear the sound when the USB is connected but no icon in My Computer. Is there a way that i can find it on my computer manually and get it to work?
Also when it does work is it supposed to transfer data from my old hard drive to my comptuer because thats what i got it for!
Thanks.

try to restart your computer. It may detect after a restart. It happens with me sometimes when I attach a new devices.

Do you have USB1.1 or 2?
Most likely it's a power problem even if you have USB2...I have USB1.1 & HAVE to use a gold plated USB lead when connecting my external USB hard drive in a caddy. Only when I use a Belkin Gold Series USB cable rather than just any usb lead will it show up in My Computer.

Yes when it works you can transfer data to & from the external hdd :)

If you are on XP then NO additional drivers are necessary for the caddy...XP already has the drivers & no! your motherboard does not have to support booting from USB..mine doesn't & very few do!

ps You can get Y shaped usb leads with 2 connectors to two USB ports & 1 connector to the caddy. for extra power. I dont like that idea (takes up 2 USB ports) ..I prefer the normal USB lead but with gold plated connectors.

I take it you got an external case for your old hard drive. even though it is plug and play.......you have to install the driver for the case. XP see's the usb drive but does not know what it is.

Your motherboard has to support booting from a usb device. If it does, you have to go into the BIOS and tell it to recognize the usb device in the boot order list.
