The song quality is certainly not going to be top notch but sure you could do that Just go to Accessories -> Entertainment-> Sound Recorder and have fun. However I suggest getting a better program if you're recording like a demo or something that you intend to distribute.

All in all you can just plug right into your pc line in with a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and use a regular pc mic and Windows Sound Recorder if quality is not much of an issue, cheapest way to go.
If you don't mind spending some cash as quality is a concern...
To record guitar you would really want to invest in first in a good sound card such as the Sound Blaster X-FI Platinum, which I have, or the X-FI Elite Pro. Both have inputs for guitar and quality mics, and can handle the signal, as well as provide some software to help with recording.
There are nice USB options out there. I am considering the M-Audio Black Box, http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MAudioBlackBox-main.html, or something similar. Several options to choose from for this kind of hardware.
Cakewalk, as already mentioned by another, offers nice affordable software for recording. Anything beats the Windows Sound Recorder. Being able to lay multiple tracks, edit and sequence is a must IMO. Cool Edit Pro works well too. Fruity Loops is great for making drum patterns.

you can do it well. you can plug your guitar to your PC if it is an electric one or has pickups or use a microphone for acoustic guitar and your voice. connect the microphone via mic line on your sound-card and your guitar to the line-in. then use a software like sound recorder( a simple, stupid software) or cakewalk( a complete and professional one). u can record your voice, guitars, bass guitar, keyboard and.... in different lines and work on them separately like putting effects, setting volumes and.... mix them finally into a track. i record my own sample songs by it . i'll be happy if i can answer your more questions via email: donatello666 (yahoo). if u got any question write "cakewalk" for subject to announce me not to delete it. have fun musician ;)

yes. you can get a cheap adapter that goes to the guitar or mic cord and plug it in the PC but the impedance will be low so the quality wont be great unless you use some kind of effects. then you will be able to record to a space hogging wav file. why dont you invest in some midi hardware and software like Cakewalk.
