They do it for the points, I think. Which is silly, as you point out, since they are meaningless. And there really are people here or are ignorant (and maybe even stupid) who don't know the rules or don't care what strangers think of them.
You can report any answer as a violation of the guidelines if it is not an attempt to answer the question.

The points play a big role.
Yahoo has created a great concept in which people are encouraged to get as much points as possible and also getting to the highest level.
So the fastest way to do this is answering every question, even if you don't know the answer. Or answering questions you do know the answer to as good as possible and be picked as "best answer" Or answering every question with a good answer, but that's real hard.

I was about the say I do not know when I realized that you have answered your own rhetorical question in part -- yes they get 2 points, worthless or not, still their 2 points, and secondly, people will still read their answers - so it helps to satisfy their exhibitionist's side.
Now that I tried to answer this seriously, I have serious question, why bother about asking a question related to why idiots answer these questions. Presumably, idiots do now know what they are doing, but surely you have a point in asking this question?

Same reason idiots post questions in inappropriate places, with misspellings and rantings about people who may actually be trying to help. They may have misunderstood the questions or simply have a different approach. Now, why is this in programming and design and posted by a self - proclaimed intellectual god that plays enough pool to be a "shark"? I've had about enough of you, *REPORTED*.

Some do it for the points.
But, I'd have to say most do it because they sincerely want to help someone. They might not be 100% accurate, but it may be enough to help steer someone in the right direction.

All the above can apply, but remember there are young people on here, too, who are silly and immature. You cannot create a perfect environment...not even on YQ&A.

To get points. Even worse are the ones who give bad or even dangerous medical advice.

For the 2 points/ answer. Regardless of how stupid you think they are, they'll never know how you think about them, and they don't care.

They have nothing better to do than to try to get as many points as they possibly can.
