I believe that Iran would use nukes under a number of conditions. This is really a complex question and I don't have time to fully elaborate so I will try to be brief in explaining why Iranian nukes are a really bad idea. Iran's President Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei believe that they have a super-islam weapon more powerful than nuclear bombs, Imam Mahdi, who is regarded as a messiah figure and who is expected to appear in a sort of "second coming" event, but at the "end of time." They have this idea that if push comes to shove, Imam Mahdi will return early to protect the islamists as part of the world's LAST RELIGION. “Oh, Allah, please facilitate Imam Mahdi’s early return and make us one of his supporters,” said Ahmadinejad. In a UN speech he prayed “Oh mighty lord, I pray to you to hasten the emergence of your last repository, the promised one, that perfect and pure human being, the one that will fill this world with justice and peace.” A few days later in Iran, Ahmadinejad told a group of religious leaders that, during his UN speech, he felt a bright light around him. This whack job thinks an apocalypse where the world ends with islam as the only religion is something good. Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is not a deterrent for that nutball, but an INCENTIVE. In Shiite Muslim belief, the Madhi’s second coming will be marked by apocalyptic times. Wars, famines, floods, etc. will ravage the Earth and be followed by Judgment Day and the final battle between good and evil. Many Shiites are convinced that President Ahmadinjead, who is considered by some as "Allah’s shadow on Earth," will fulfill his divine mission to prepare the world for the coming of the Islamic savior. I'm not entirely clear if this 12th imam guy will keep the islamists protected and alive after everyone else is dead or if he'll speed them on their way to allah and the virgins. What does seem obvious is that either way, the rest of us are supposed to be dead.

Now, does it really sound like a good idea to give these people an apocalypse trigger mechanism so they can try to end the world their way?

Only in self defense - don't drink the American media flavoured kool aid. It's one thing when a Mullah tells a suicide bomber that they will have X number of virgins waiting for them in heaven - it's a lot more complicated when the people who are actually in power face death (imagine if there was a physical risk to the members of the Bush administration if they invaded Iraq) - they simply won't allow the home of Shia Islam to be destroyed just so they can launch nukes at Israel. It's all just one big political piece of propoganda - the Iranians have had a nuclear program ever since America helped them create it back in the 60s - don't you think it's a pretty strange coincidence that the whole issue has only just come up in the last few months, while the Iranian government has been run by fundamentalists since '79 (nuclear program included)??? Nobody cared a year or so ago... On top of that, isn't it a little strange that Iraq, Iran and Venezuala are a) In America's sights, and b) among the world's most oil rich nations?

If you had asked the same question of North Korea a few years ago you'd have people saying that they would use them. Same with China, same with Saddam, same with Cuba, same with Venezuela - same with pretty much any country out there that the American elite start a black propoganda campaign against. It's just sad that people fall for it so easily - like not so long ago when they stopped trying to find Osama and turned Saddam into the threat... Hussein was an evil bastard, but he sure as hell wasn't a threat (according to the weapons inspectors and the CIA - the only folk who said he was a threat was the Bush admin and the media) - not even to his neighbours, let alone the U.S...

I don't think they would. Numerous countries have developed nukes in the post war era but none have ever been used. It is more of a fear game, using the potential of nuclear strikes as the main weapon. If a country attacked another with nuclear weapons, there would be serious reprisals and immense loss of life. If Iran wanted to really put the frigteners up the West, they could stop oil supplies or greatly increase their price, and they could do this without risk of a nuclear attack in return. That would get Bush and Blair thinking!

Would Iran use the big one and try to blow Israel into oblivion? I don't think they would be that stupid. Israel isn't one of my favorite countries at the moment. They are part of the problem but the rest of the world would not stand for something like that happening. Not even the countries that do not recognize Israel. Iran would only be a memory if they tried that.

BUT... You have to ask yourself this...

If Iran acquires the capablility of producing their own nuclear weapons - Would Iran supply some terrorist group, say Hezbollah, a dirty bombs to bring over to the US to set off in our major cities killing thousands upon thousands of people if they could? IN A HEARTBEAT!! That is something to consider if you believe we should just allow them to continue down the path that they are. Heck, even France realizes this is a real threat. Russia and China just want cheap oil and a promise to never point anything their direction and Iran is happy to oblige as long as the two countries don't put any pressure on them to give up their nuclear program. This is a no-brainer folks.

Who knows brennus???? Like it is no big deal? Oh for goodness sakes, wake up and grow up.

Peace@Iran... You better pray you are right. Otherwise your days on this earth are going to be short. That isn't an American threat... that is basically what your President is condemning you to by his arrogance and actions. I picked up on one phrase you used that kindof proves my point. "We won't kill anyone innocent"
Iran funded Hezbollah in this latest war with Israel. There is no denying that, not even by you. You going to tell me that the women and children that the bombs killed in Israel were not innocent? Can't say one thing and do another.

Oh, and by the way, the 72 virgins thing? It's a pipedream.

Yes, I think they will use it, under some conditions.
North Korea likewise, may be under different conditions.
And what about the other nuclear powers?
Pakistan
India
China
France
UK
Israel
USA
Russia
And a lot more can develop a nuclear weapon very quickly, like:
South Africa
Japan
Brazil
......
Yes the Man will use nukes again. Iran is on the line, among the more willingly.

No,because they know they would be blown off the map in retaliation. They don't understand why so many other countries can have nukes, including a rogue State like Israel,& they can't.They want to be up there with the big boys,so that other countries will take them seriously. It would also act as a deterrent against Israel.

of course not, then they would be alienated, the only place they can launch if they have nukes is Israel. Israel may or may not shoot the nukes before they reach Israel but soon Israel would launch its nukes at Iran . also trying to nuke Israel would only invite an invasion by NATO and some other countries. It would be an all lose for Iran. the best option they may do is they may bargain with the west.

No, I do not think so. The only country who got Nuclear weapons in the middle east is ISRAEL. The only country who attacks its neighbours and killed hundred thousands of women and children is ISRAEL. The only country who gets away with anything is ISRAEL. Why not Iran having the same weapons, so it can creates a balance in the middle east. All those who said "Yes" they said it because they do not want Iran to have the weapons; mainly because it is an Islamic country! This is the fact! non of these hypocrite dare to say that the only country who got them and used them is the biggest democracy in the world...USA!! By the way Iran do not need nuclear weapons to get rid of Israel. Ask Hezbollah!!

My cousin was teacher in Iran for a number of years. She returned to this country because of the middle east situation in general and the seriously growing ammount of fanatical views being expressed by the people where she lived. She is convinced they will use them if & when they they have them. But more worrying is the belief that they will use them on a whim for a first strike not in retaliation to someone using them on Iran

They don't have them, and I don't know if they would use them if they did. They themselves say that they don't even want them, though that is not necessarily true.
I do know that the US has got them and has used them.
I think that the only reason the US has not used them since 1945 is because Russia and China have them. I cannot blame Iran if they do develop them, seeing as Israel, Russia, and Pakistan all have them, and are all pretty close to them.
If the US really wanted to cut down on the amount of nuclear weapons they should set up a disarmament club, and everyone including the US should get rid of their weapons, bit by bit.
You think it's likely?
