There are TWO lights.
One,
"service engine soon" is mileage based. and is a friendly reminder.
Two:
"check engine" is linked to the computer to indicate a problem notice by any of several sensors, and tells you there is an issue that needs attention now.
Some of the answerers above don't have a clue.
If it bugs you, disconnect your negative battery terminal for a minute or two. You will have to reset your radio memory though.

The computer in a car uses numerous sensors in order to determine if engine service is needed, including the odometer. A service engine light could just mean due for oil change or a serious problem. If you do not know, you should take the car to a mechanic.

Ive personally never heard that those lights were pre set by mileage, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't so in your case. I have had a few(more than one) with the sensors going on them and this in turn would affect the -check engine soon- light to come on !

There is something wrong if the engine light comes on. I had a car with over 300,000 miles on it and the check engine light never came on once so its probably not mileage.

It's telling you that there is a problem if the car is running fine most of the time its a O2 sensor. They don't cost much and you can get them at any part store. Do you have a AutoZone store in your area or AdvanceAuto Parts, they check light for free. But you will have to let the dealer cut it off.

the computer in your car gets feedback from your sensors and when one of them has or detects a problem it turns on your check engine light. A mechanic can hook up a took to the computer and find out what's going on.

If it's over a hundred thousand then it's mileage. If not and it's a fairly new vechicl you may not have put the gas cap on tight enough. If so it will reset itself in time. My new toyota tacoma did that with the gas cap.

Yes it means your car needs service.
Get oil lub and filter is the first thing .
check radiator water.and cap.
get new fuel filter, it is very important.
Chech transmission oil.
A tune up may be needed too if thegas miles are down.
sometimes it also needs catalytic converter at that time.
