Taking into considerations such things as safety, need to refuel and political conditions in some countries, the shortest route often takes airplanes near or over the poles (especially the north pole).

Try this out on a globe. Take a piece of string. Hold one end down on NY City. Hold the other end down on New Delhi. If the string is loose, put it until it's tight. That is a great circle. That would be the shortest route from NYC to ND.

Now try that for NYC and Moscow. Notice that the route takes you near to the North Pole.
