I had this problem too, especially with my 4 month olds little tiny socks. His Granny had the perfect solution though. When he's worn an outfit, we safety pin the socks to the tag. This not only keeps the socks from being "eaten" by the dryer, but also saves time in matching the socks with the correct outfit.

It used to happen to me but now it has stopped. I place the socks in a nylon net bag and throw it in the washer. The socks get washed and are all together. No longer case of the missing sock.

What happens is they stick to the inside of shirts and pants. Fabric softener can help, but will cause a film on the lint filter. At least every other load - wash the filter with soap and water so water flows freely through the filter ( and keeps your dryer from burning out). Actually you should wash the filter whether or not you use softener. Mesh laundry bags can also help.

You might want to try a mesh laundry bag with a string cord.
You put your PAIRED socks inside of the mesh laundry bag. Tighten the top of the bag with the string. Since it is mesh -- the water can still get to socks and the socks can't escape the bag!!
Voila!

Funny you should ask, I swear my dryer ate my son's football sock last night, this morning there wasn't a trace of it. Too bad you can't make people disappear in dryers.

They've run away to the land of lost socks.
They're having a blast.
Sometimes, when they misbehave
they are sent right back into your
washer, or dryer, or somewhere in
your laundry room -- the location of
return is in direct proportion to the
level of misbehavior.
I've got about 3 whites, lefties
would be happy to trade -- what
have you got?
Let me know. lol
