Global warming is a cyclical event that changes Earth's environment over hundreds, thousands, and millions of years. Man, however, has accelerated the cycle over the past 150 years due to our "industrial revolution". Smoke-belching factories and vehicle emissions have polluted the air and helped speed the melting of the polar ice caps. Scientists claim if we don't do something within ten years or less, we will be unable to change the way global warming will affect our planet. Cities on both coasts of both major oceans will experience severe floods and disastrous hurricanes. Life as we know it will change dramatically, and our great-great grandchildren will probably have to wear gas masks in order to breathe fresh air. Clean drinking water will be in short supply. Landfills, which WE filled up with all our disposable waste, will leach toxic poisons that will infiltrate our ground waters and soil our rich farm lands. And our great-great grandchildren will have US to thank for all of it, simply because we were too damned lazy to REuse, REturn, REcycle, and REduce our waste. Simply because we were too inconvenienced to be stewards of the Earth as Nature (or an intelligent designer, or an evolutionary 'big bang' process, or God) intended. Simply because we failed to protect and preserve the delicate ecological balance between man, plants and animals so that we all could survive on this planet. We felt it was our 'right' to squander Earth's natural resources. We felt it was our 'right' to toss cardboard, glass, aluminum, newsprint, scrap paper, used cooking grease, oil, magazines, tin cans, steel, old computers, cell phones, phone books, and all other items not easily biodegradable into landfills instead of recycling all our waste. We felt it was our 'right' to concern ourselves with Britney Spears' love life instead of focusing on things that really mattered in this life. It was all about US, and we didn't give one iota about our descendants and how they would live in squalor just because we wanted to enjoy the 'good life'. -RKO-

looks like hurricanes and other tropical storms will intensify, and then some critical point will be passed and a massive climate change will occur somewhat abruptly, potentially resulting in some sort of runaway climate, either a Venusian greenhouse, or (much more likely) an Ice Age. There's a good chance that the climates just move around a little, which would have some pretty dramatic socioeconomic effects. What is certain is that change will occur. It's not a threat to the human species. Plenty of those to worry about already. I see no reason why the cycle of Ice Ages is going to stop now, regardless of whether or not we are around when the next one occurs.
(it's important to note that when the ice caps melt, they lower the salinity of the water, and fresh water behaves differently than salt water. Thus, some believe that the ocean currents will necessarily change, wreaking havoc with precipitation systems)

Due to global warming, ice caps could melt, inundating coastal cities. Rainfall patterns may change, causing droughts in some areas and floods in others. A warming climate would increase the amount of decay and fire in the boreal forests. Global warming can cause outbreaks of malaria, yellow fever, dengue and other temperate regions where they have been virtually known.

I agree about the investment comment, because media will continue to hype this. Global warming is a myth, a lie. We only have records for the briefest glimpse of this planet's history, and the trends are so minor as to make them unremarkable. Don't buy into the fear.

Global warming, increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans.
The increased amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) are the primary causes of the human-induced component of warming. They are released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing and agriculture, etc. and lead to an increase in the greenhouse effect.
An increase in global temperatures can in turn cause other changes, including a rising sea level and changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation. These changes may increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, hurricanes, and tornados. Other consequences include higher or lower agricultural yields, glacier retreat, reduced summer streamflows, species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease vectors.
