the boot, i know the men are happy cos i have indian male friends and they think its just fine. Most have had plenty of opportunity to sow their oats and now want kids/housewife etc. The system works for them just fine, they have told me that.

sweetshine, please dont patronise me, the guy im talking about has been my flatmate for 3yrs, he went home 4days ago for his wedding, he has never met the girl. Lots of women have no choice but to marry the man their parents choose, even ones living in places like dubai and holding down good jobs. MY other indian flatmate has been denied marriage by his girls father cos he is from the south of india (kerala) and her family is from the north. This isnt somethign that only happens outside cities.

Most of the Indian ladies are brain washed by their parents, that decision taken by them may not be correct & it is their responsibility to take the best decision for her & they won't be thinking any bad for her. Also they are bombarded with stories how certain girls who had taken decision by themselves had been cheated by their mates or their marriages being in mess. Also meeting /dating with person of opposite gender is still a taboo in most parts of India, Therfore Marriages in India are mostly arranged by the parents. Also Divorces are largely governed by financial indepence, resulting in poor number of divorces in middle class families, even if the marriage may be havoc for both parties. that's why marriages in India or any country where ladies don't have financial fall back options work! Also after certain period of time the persons would know each other, won't they?

That is not how it works. Although, everyone has this opinion about India being a land of snake charmers, and god-knows-what, it does not hold true for urban India. True, these things do happen in rural India. But, as an urban Indian woman, I know of nobody in my generation, at least, who has married someone they have never met. An arranged marriage is different from what it is made out to be. The families find someone they think would be perfect for their son/daughter. The pair is made to meet each other, and then after a few meetings, now, this may go on for months, it is mutually decided. Not too much pressure. Although, most people in urban India prefer to choose their own partners, an arranged marriage is not looked down upon. It's a normal phenomenon, and treated that way. It's just a matter of preference, that's it. And, sweetie, we do have issues losing our virginity to strangers.

Well I'm Indian but thank God I don't have to deal with that. I mean I can marry whoever I choose to marry. I was raised differently. I know it's difficult for many Indian women especially since their families pick the man they'll marry. I guess I'm just fortunate.

This is our culture and we are mentally prepared for that, and we dont have love or relationship like u, so we dont have someone as our choice to marry, if someone loves any, there may be a choice that whom he/she should marry, and in that case mostly we go with our parents choice, even when we love someone it is like, I love u but cant marry with u.

How vain of you to think the men are "happy" about it! What makes you think a particular Indian woman is any kind of prize?
