Good question, to tell you the truth I think those days are long gone now, thankfully more and more men are wearing jeans and t'shirts and just been themselves and relaxing more, I suppose the guys who have to wear the office uniform can't wait for their free time to slip on jeans and t'shirts after been strutted up like a turkey all week in a shirt, tie and suit, more and more 'older' guys are turning to jeans and t'shirts too thank goodness, we live in a more relaxed society these days as far as attire goes, so I guess if you feel you want to wear a shirt, tie and suit then its up to you, the dress code rules have become more relaxed thankfully and I guess a lot of men are grateful for the fact that they only feel it necessary to wear a shirt, tie and suit to either work, a wedding, funeral, christening or some occasion or event that requires it..

No such abrupt transition (as if it is part of the age-evolutionary process, neh?). In fact, some wear trousers only when reporting for office work (as demanded by the corporate environment) but will always wear jeans while on the go, where your appearance matters less and where protective clothing (which is afforded by jeans) is more important. After all, wearing jeans is almost always the more practical option.

I used to wear pants shirt and tie to work, jeans and t shirt at weekends. I have now retired due to ill health and now I wear jeans and t shirts all the time, unless going out to a function at night.

Jeans (at least in America!) aren't a feature of youth; my beloved husband is 83, and wears jeans from time to time.
Granted, they ride low, under his 9-months-and-counting abdomen, but he still looks adorable in them!
As for me, I'm 30 years younger, but don't wear jeans often because of my work; I'd ruin them with the paints & solvents I use, and so I normally wear twill painter's pants (so old, they are soft as butter).
Oh, but to answer the question: it's not so much giving up the jeans as adding the suit & tie, and I think that happens when the subject's world opens up beyond school life; the more varied your life, the wider choice you need in your wardrobe!

My partner's 53, only wears trousers, shirt and tie when he can't do otherwise and he doesn't feel comfortable in them so i guess ... He'll still be walking about in his jeans, T Shirts and/or jumpers when pushing a zimmer frame and that doesn't worry me because i'' be the same too! LOL

All depends on your figure. At a certain age (late 30,s early 40,s)men have to battle hard to keep a flat stomach. The more apple shaped you are the more uncomfortable it is to wear jeans. The older a man gets he has to pull his jeans higher to keep his belly from spilling over his waistband and being very uncomfortable.
So i guess the more crunches you do the longer you can wear jeans.

Depends on the bloke, but normally it's in his 50s or 60s. Slacks are the trouser of choice and they creep higher up the body the more a man ages - it's true!
