you have too many tasks running, or more likely, one of the tasks is having problems getting along on your computer and getting stuck.
click on start/run and type in msconfig and hit enter. an app called msconfig will pop up. click on the start up tab all the way to the right, and you will get a list of all the applications that are running when you start your computer. uncheck one, reboot your computer and see if your computer runs better, if not recheck it and pick another one, reboot again, keep doing this until you figure out which one is hanging your system then you can uninstall it. use common sense and uncheck the ones you don't need.

Most of the answers are good.

Here are the things you should do:

Derangement the computer, check for what is running and clean it.

You may be running some checks without knowing like anti-virus scan.

The cleaning process will take off the subfamilies left behind from down loading the stuff. Lots of time when you read an article with a picture; on say CNN or any of the site, after you close the article lots of stuff stays in the computer, this is for your benefit-this actually allows you to open the file quickly. But this also uses up lots of space-remembers picture is worth 1000 words, when it come to computer it is lots More than even10,000.

It could be a lot of things, just a slow system, not enough RAM, a program like Norton AV or Internet Security is loading(a lot of AV or firewall programs take some time to load, especially on older machines), or something else that's most likely software related. Not really sure without knowing more or taking a look at it, those are some strong possibilities though.
