If you want hosting or a domain for your site, you have to pay for it. But what about the people who own the hosting sites, who sell it, how do they get control over it?

Domain registrations are handled by a primary registrar for each country. These registrars sell in bulk to sub-registrars at a discount, and many of the registrars sell on to you with some of this discount passed on.

The hosting companies have to pay for a sizable pipe to the nearest point of presence, normally in one of the interent 'telehouses' that act as centralisation points for the network. They have to pay a lot of money for this access, and pass these charges on to you as your monthly ISP bill.

They have lots and lots of money.

A server itself is going to cost about $2000 for a cheap crappy one.

The ISP is going to cost about $1000/mo for a decent bandwidth. The reason these people get to sell it so cheap, is because they buy it in bulk... just like you get things in bulk at Sams Club.

So, unless you're willing to fork over $1k a month and $2k for a peice of junk. Go with a hosting company. If you're thinking about starting your own hosting company, I hope you have close to $100k saved up. That might be enough to start a crappy company that will fail in a year.
