It came from a quote by Oscar Levant, a witty pianist and showman who was best friends with Gershwin.

Talking about Hollywood, Levant quipped: "Peel away the phony tinsel from this town, and you know what you'll find? Real tinsel !"

Tinsel is something that is bright and shiny that sparkles. Some people, who have Christmas trees, put strings of tinsel, as a garnish on the tree. It comes in all colors, silver, gold, red, green, blue and white, to mention a few. The tinsel on a tree helps to make it more exciting and pleasant to look at.
Hollywood is called tinseltown because of the stars who work there, who live there, who are common to its environment. They help to make it a more exciting and pleasant place to be. The word stars itself suggests bright and shiny things that sparkle!
