After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is -- and isn't -- a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.
For now, membership will be restricted to the eight "classical" planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

There are also 4 Dwarf Planets: Ceres, Pluto, Charon & UB313.

Prior to 1600
From the dawn of history until the beginning of the 17th century the known universe consisted of only 8 bodies:
Earth
Sun
Moon
Mercury
Venus
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
plus the "fixed" stars. These are the ones that can be seen easily without any optical instruments. In Europe, the prevailing view was the Ptolemaic system with the Earth at the center and the other bodies revolving around it.

Pluto is now considered a comet or "dwarf planet".
The newly agreed on definition of a planet states that it orbits its star (and is not itself a star), is nearly round, and has cleared its orbit of other objects of similar size. Because Pluto has not cleared its orbit but is part of the Kuiper Belt, it is no longer considered a planet. On the upper limit of things (where it is more questionable and yet people don't seem quite as botherd by it) the body must not be capable of starting nuclear fusion, typically considered to be right around 10 Jupiter masses.
