Because originally they could be driven by the motor, or by pedals, hence mo-ped. These days the pedals have gon, but the name remains.

When I was 16 I had a moped with pedals, the good old Yamaha FS1E DX. Where are you now NWY923P I, miss you even though 26 years have gone by.

The word moped is a Swedish short form of the word motorvelociped. Velociped is an older Swedish word for bicycle, imported from the French word vélocipède formed from the Latin velocispedis meaning "fast foot".

Simply put : mo for motor and ped for pedal moped = motor petal

it was the fact that if it was 50cc had pedals and later when in 1977 there were ristricted to 30mph i think that is the reason why the name stuck also most mopeds spend there life in towns

Not only do the have pedals, it often is a legal requirement that you should be able to actually use them, like on a bicycle.
