in show jumping the judge only looks to see if the fence is knocked down or if the horse refused to jump.. they also look at time

in "hunter" classes they actually judge how nice the horse travels around the course (leads etc) and how well it tucks its legs when going over the fences

in "Equitation" classes they look at the rider and how the rider sits and corrects behavior

in "Pleasure" classes they look at the horse and its suitablity to that discipline.. so if the horse is fighting the rider - it wont win..

It depends on alot of things, but basically they want to see that the two of you are well presented, make a great team, that your horse is working in a good frame and is carrying itself, and both of you are performing well, without any discrepancies (refusals, naughty behaviour, etc). I would suggest joining a pony club first, they will help to set you up with the right skills, so you can both be confident about what is expected of you and what you can acheive.

Good Luck :)

show jumping is only judged on time, knocked down rails, refusals, falls, and completing the course in order.
however other classes look for other things. such as your pesentation, controll, pleasurable horse, movement and ability as a rider.

Manners, way of going, soundness, suitability of horse to rider, neatness.

The overall presentation must be neat. Rider should have hair neat, boots polished. Tack should be well fitted and clean. Horse should be clean, trimmed and braided (if required).

Rhythm should be smooth, turns flowing, distances met.
