Perhaps. Although I used to play video games against the machine, but now I can play against real live people all over the world, and talk to them while I'm shooting them (in, ahem, the game). My point, in some ways, as computer technology progresses, things are going from less social to more social. ...just as the web is a massive link between ideas, perhaps in the future it could serve to help enhance our interpersonal relationships. E.g., I now can see my family 3000 miles away on the web cam, but couldn't just a couple years back.

I think so if it's over done. You cannot pick up on clues, tones of voice, body language, etc as you could when talking face to face. These are important to giving you more insight into the person, their life, and maybe where you fit in (or don't). The Internet is great, just like a letter at filling in the gaps in time when being away from someone.

Yes and no.
Yes, when you get absorbed into the whole routine of speaking to people you don't know. Or if you base relationships with people solely on what you say in chat. There can be a lot of deceiving in the internet.
No, because it sometimes helps you, when you try to stay in contact with close friends that are on another country and the phone tariffs are very high, etc. And you can talk to many of these at once.

It could be - if people talked to me in person the way they do when they IM me, they'd have some serious bruises to show for it.

Fortunately, most of these types are stuck inside with their eyes glued to the screen and their hands occupied with the keyboard, so I can't complain much.

Eventually, they'll get it right.

As the last person said, it can be if you get addicted, which is easy to do. That is why I am only on when I am home alone. But NO loved one wants to sit around while their partner sits on the net until they are tired and ready to go to bed. Your loved ones need your attention too!

It can be, if one becomes addicted to the internet. Casual web surfing hurts no one, though.
