There was indeed a Creswell Colliery disaster but it was by no means as huge as the words of the song make out. Creswell is in Derbyshire, near Worksop. In September 1950 a damaged conveyor belt caught in a motor at the colliery and caused the motor to overheat and catch fire, with 80 men trapped beyond the flames. Various other errors and mishaps prevented the fire from being put out. Some bodies were recovered, but it was clear that no one could have survived. The fire was only finally put out by the whole area of the mine being sealed off from the air, and could not be re-opened until Easter 1951, when the remaining bodies were recovered. I am not aware of any firefighters losing their lives. The enquiry produced a number of factors involved in the high death rate, including telephones being too far from the face, repair work being done on the "paddy" (the underground train used to convey the men to and from the lift shaft), inadequate air shafts and low water pressure in the fire hoses. You can read a short but comprehensive account of the fire in "Crypts, Caves and Catacombs - subterranea of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire" by Graham McEwan.
