To measure what knowledge you have gained. You don't HAVE to take them, but you will if you want to get into college. They want to know that you can handle the curriculum.

People have to take the SATs because they're a standardized test. Theoretically, tests like the SATs will show colleges and universities what a student should know in order to be successful in college. If each state had a different test, colleges in other states would be hesitant to accept that as being proof that you're up for the job. By having one standard test for the entire country, it levels out the playing field.

Colleges believe that SATs can measure the sucess of students in college. Since they are standardized, people from all around the world can take them. Some colleges don't believe this ie George Mason which doesn't requires standardized scores for people with a GPA of 3.5 or higher unless they are planning on doing a sport.
They are also needed to support the people who make and distribute these tests. If we stopped, well they would be out of a job so it is kind of a conspiracy.
It's just something that needs to be done so good luck.

Well, we take tests to monitor our knowledge about the subject in question.
We take the SATs to get into a good College.. :P
Maybe it is to see who are worth giving scholarships (those who are more promising of being successful).

To make sure we have decent standards.Seeing as nobody wants to actually put the work in to learn. They don't mind cheating anyone trusting enough to employ them though!

Because we live in competition. You need proof to convince others you are just as good, or better.
